Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Gilbert & Sullivan Society?
A: Not only are we Exeter's oldest amateur G&S society, but we are also one
of the longest running student societies on campus, (the society started in 1968). Our aim is to produce every year a light operetta by W.S.
Gilbert & Sir Arthur Sullivan, who were famous during the late 19th century
for writing entertaining and satirical shows.
Q: How do I join the society?
A: You can see us at the Fresher's Fair at the end of welcome. If you miss us there, e-mail the musical director before the end of the first week of term to organise an audition.
Q: What does joining G&S entail?
A: Singing, dancing, dressing up in silly costumes and having the time of your life!
Q: Does this mean a social life comes included?
A: You'd better believe it! In G&G we're dedicated to having a good time, even during rehearsals!
Q: So, what can I do in the society?
A: You can sing in the chorus, or take on a principal role, which will involve solos and speaking parts. If singing and dancing aren't your thing, but you'd still like to be involved, you can also join the backstage crew. Towards the end of the year you can run for a committee position and help keep the next show running, or even audition to join the directorial team for the next year's show.
Q: And when do you rehearse?
A: We usually rehearse two evenings per week. Principals will have additional and sometimes separate rehearsals. There is also a residential weekend in the first term, which is the best time to learn pieces and get to know the rest of the society. Towards show week there will also be weekend rehearsals. When auditioning for a role you are committing yourself to attend these rehearsals, however exceptions can be made in some circumstances. As we get closer to show week it will become increasingly important that you're at rehearsals. These rehearsals are usually balanced out with an increase in socials too!
